RFID technology makes self-checkout smarter and more efficient

The new RFID-based self-service cashier can scan the entire shopping basket once, providing a fast and seamless in-store shopping experience. This concept aims to eliminate the long line of customers in front of the cash register when shopping in stores, which has been a "normal" that customers have to accept since the rise of large retail stores.

RFID counters simplify product scanning procedures and shorten customer stays at self-checkout counters. Customers simply place their shopping bags / baskets on the counter, the counter will scan all the products at once, and the display will show the complete product list and the final bill. This improves the self-checkout experience because customers no longer need to scan each product individually, which is time consuming and sometimes requires multiple scans to read the product code.

Using RFID counters, customers can swipe their cards, pay through the app, or choose to pay in cash. When paying with an app, customers will connect to the checkout counter through the retailer's app. All they need to do is scan the QR code at the cash register and confirm the payment through the app. According to the three partners, the entire payment process took less than 30 seconds.

In addition to grocery markets and stores, this technology can also be used in fashion and hardware retailers to improve their customer experience. RFID technology has evolved significantly over the past few years, and issues such as tag costs and limited readability of products containing metal / liquids have previously been resolved.

The all-RFID strategy achieves a return on investment by adding value to multiple applications in the product life cycle: from the start of production to private labels, supply chains, compliance processes and stores for retailers. Label costs are significantly reduced when used in large quantities, especially in stores. RFID technology can be used in multiple application scenarios, such as accurate inventory management, dynamic pricing scenarios, smart shelves, digital shelf assistants, and anti-theft protection. Using RFID can also help retailers better understand their customers.
