How to create a low-cost IoT label?
Two members of the Self-Activating and Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA) and technology providers Evry thng and Wiliot recently announced a collaboration to develop low-cost tags for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
Wi liot's technology uses the energy of radio waves available in the air to power small Bluetooth sensors on stickers, enabling consumers to interact with the product. In other words, the chip collects energy from the environment, so no battery is needed.
Wi liot uses printed electronics technology with partners to combine the chip and sensor into secure, smart, and low-cost tags. Since IoT devices and sensors are actually small computers, these devices require a constant power source to maintain operation or network communication. So this means that many application scenarios in the real world are challenging.
Since the tag can recycle radio waves (especially Wi-Fi and mobile phone bands), this energy is not only enough to power the chip and sensors, but also to communicate with any part of the Bluetooth-enabled infrastructure, allowing Bluetooth to be used with Interaction.
Energy harvesting is nothing new in the IoT world. However, the low entry cost and miniaturization offered by Wi liot bring its tags closer to complete devices. Although UHF RFID tags are also cheap, there are important differences between the two technologies.
UHF RFID requires a large investment in a dedicated reader to meet the required coverage. The tags developed by Wiliot use existing infrastructure to collect energy for data communication and cloud sharing.
Evry thng cloud products enable consumer product brands to acquire resources on a global scale and apply intelligent data throughout the product life cycle, thereby enabling Wi liot's technology to adapt to the IoT. The companies said: "This is indeed a powerful combination." Such a combination will enable customers to transfer the advanced sensing and location data collected by Wiliot tags to the Evry thng product cloud, giving them access to powerful Business analysis capabilities.
